Treasures of Morocco: A Sensuous Feast of Color

Join us for a uniquely exotic evening that will senses! A “taste of Morocco”.

OPENING NIGHT: Friday, November 9th 5:30-9:00 at Ysla Gallery in Wilmette.

What may have started as a mild competition while we were on assignment in Italy and Morocco became inspirational and synergistic. We were quite excited about the passion and energy which was unleashed.

It is seldom two photographers can work this seamlessly together and create one body of work with cohesiveness such as this. In some instances we do not know who shot one image or the other. Therefore in these collections, we will both sign each print. We travelled to Italy to capture the beauty of Tuscany, Florence and Venice. In Morocco we photographed in Casablanca, Marrakech and a small part of the countryside. The trip to Morocco was driven by the possibility of a book whose working title is Treasures of Morocco: A Sensual Feast of Color.

Gallery Show Buckner & Mack

With less than three weeks to go until the opening I have a lot of work to do printing each image we’ve selected for the show and then getting them into the frames. Jill is in Atlanta on a few shoots for the next week which gives me the chance to concentrate on getting the prints done so we can both sign each one and then frame them.  I know we shall have everything ready by the opening but right now all you see is work as you only want the finest prints – which do take time. A print comes off the printer and you look at it with a critical eye and decide if any changes need to be made. No matter how calibrated your system is, it is much like being in the darkroom in the way you work with a print after it “develops”. Yet it is also one of the most exciting parts of being a photographer – bringing your vision into print so everyone can see your way of seeing the world. Your perspective, or in this case, our perspective!

We hope you will all come to the opening – it shall be a great night about our trip to Morocco!

Images from Tuscany

We have returned from our trip to Italy and Morocco and did not have time to post images online. We have finally picked out a few images from Tuscany to upload. As most of you know the first week we were working for Gourmet Destinations which does spectacular trips lead by Jens Bauerle into the Tuscany region. They specialize in farm to plate trips looking at farms, wineries and cheese and meat producers as well as gourmet restaurants. This one had a special guest Chris Marchino from Spiaggia Restaurant who was great to hang with. As we walked in fields he would point out spices growing wild.

Some of these images were done on the tour and some done in the two days we spent in Tuscany after the tour. We would often split off in our own car before meeting the rest of the group for dinner and shoot in the late afternoon light as we made our way back. We found many of the small hilltop medieval towns full of great images at every turn. Outside of them you could find lovely landscapes of Tuscany. The poppies were in full bloom, yet the wheat fields which turn the landscape that golden color where still green.

You always want your images to be heart stopping. Every shot cannot be that. I think your goal can be for one spectacular image per day and weather is a big factor as well. If you find you have more, it is a plus. We had a lot of cloudy days so on the days we had great evening light we worked fast and furiously. Now that we are back we hope to be able to upload more images from Morocco and our second week in Florence and Venice. Stay tuned…

In future posts we will also talk about some of the thought processes we went through as we worked with a scene, how it was for two photographers to create images in concert with each other and more.

We hope to start bringing folks over to Tuscany for photo workshops and tours for 4-6 days starting next spring. The Trip You Want on Your List of Experiences

Today we are leaving on one of those trips that are on your life list probably, at least for us it is. Really more like two trips in one. We fly to Florence, Italy and shoot for a week in Tuscany. The client is a tour company so we need scenes of the area along with people shots and we get to join the tour and shoot what they are doing as well. Then we spend two days on our own in Tuscany, yes probably shooting some more for ourselves plus relaxing in a Villa near San Gimignano. Then on Monday we fly to Casablanca, Morocco and will also visit Marrakech. This is for a possible book we are working on with a working title of Treasures of Morocco: A Sensual Feast of Color. This book looks at Morocco from the aspect of its bright colors, sensual food, and the combination they bring to the country.

The book is intended to bring people together from both countries as awe work on the book and the accompanying video and music for the eBook side. Jill has been to Morocco, albeit in College, so it will be interesting to see how much has changed since she has been there. I have not been to Italy or Morocco so I am especially looking forward to the experiences of both places.

We then return to Florence and spend three days exploring there before taking a train up to Venice and spending time photographing that famous city. We hope to have images to add to all of your homes after a gallery show sometime this fall!

We are both so excited about this trip and what it will bring to us – it is a trip of a lifetime. Keep watching this space for updates from overseas! We’ll upload a few images along the way as well.

Teaming up with Another Photographer on a project

Two weeks ago I teamed up with photographer Jill Buckner to shoot both exteriors and interiors for Muffy McAuley and John Leinweber of their Excel Lofts, part of Renew Managements stable of properties here in Evanston, Illinois. They are wonderful lofts which even though it was empty had plenty of angles and opportunities to make great images. John was the architect of the properties and has a sense for the angles and features which make live/work lofts such a great place. Now I must confess I leased a loft from them for a little over 5 years at the Peacock Lofts so I might be a bit prejudice on how nice they are.

Our mission was to make 5-8 images of the building which they could use for various marketing programs. This was the first project Jill and I had teamed up on and it was very interesting to work with another photographer. We both have a background in architectural work so we split up who would do what and then began to work together leaving behind the original plan. We realized early on we both had a different style of looking at the space. Jill could see very interesting artistic angles while I saw more commercial views. We never stepped on each other’s toes, or invaded the others viewfinder as the case may be, and both of us thought the other one had made better images. We acted as assistants to each other when one of us was doing a shot and needed something moved or added to the image. The respect we had for each other and our way of working was perfectly in tune. It helped us make some great images in a short time and have a lot of fun in the process. while we were not in a competition the fact we were working with another very creative person raised our levels of inspiration and creativity as well. We made images we might not have had we done this project on our own.

In the end we brought in some props for the kitchen area, came back another day for dusk shots, and shot both exteriors (Richard) at dusk while Jill shot the interiors at dusk. So with one call Muffy and John received two photographers on the job who could produce more work in the time allotted than just one could. Makes great business sense.
